# Northern Lights Forecast: 11 States May See Aurora Monday Night

> **Open Intelligence Dossier** · First detected: 2026-09-08 14:07 UTC · Category: Science

## Executive Summary
A series of Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) may make the Northern Lights visible across multiple US states this week, including Monday and Tuesday nights.

## Intelligence Brief
According to reports from Forbes, the aurora could potentially be seen in 11 states on Monday night, with subsequent projections indicating the phenomenon may reach as many as 20 states by Tuesday night. Localized reports from the St. Cloud Times indicate that Minnesota specifically has a chance to see the northern lights tonight, while other regional outlets such as Upper Michigan's Source, WTOK, and WMTV 15 NEWS are tracking where the lights may be visible throughout the week. Coverage of this event is widespread, with national outlets like USA Today and Forbes providing state-specific alerts. Local news sources including KING5.com and WTHR are focusing on identifying the best chances for viewers to spot the lights within their respective regions.

The reporting emphasizes the shifting geography of the visibility window, moving from a smaller set of nine states to a broader range of up to 20 states as the week progresses. These outlets are providing guidance to the public on where to look to maximize their chances of witnessing the aurora borealis. Technical context for this atmospheric activity is provided by The Watchers, which reports that multiple Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) are forecast to impact Earth on September 8 and September 9. This solar activity has led to the issuance of a G1 geomagnetic storm watch. Such geomagnetic disturbances are the drivers behind the increased visibility of the aurora at lower latitudes than usual, explaining why states further south than the traditional aurora zones are being included in the current forecasts.

Observers should monitor updates regarding the G1 geomagnetic storm watch and the impact of the CMEs scheduled for September 8 and 9. Future visibility depends on the arrival of these solar events, and readers should look for updated state lists as the forecast evolves from the initial 11 states on Monday toward the potential 20 states mentioned for Tuesday night. Coverage does not yet specify the exact hours of peak visibility or the specific list of all 20 states involved in the Tuesday night projection.
