## Executive Summary
College football analysts are grading the initial performances of 31 first-year coaches following the season's opening games.

## Intelligence Brief
The start of the college football season has triggered a widespread evaluation of first-year coaching debuts across the sport. According to reporting from USA Today, there are 31 college football coach debuts currently being ranked. These assessments range from what Sports Illustrated describes as dream starts to total disasters in a trend dubbed the Forde-Yard Dash. Specific performance grades have emerged, with CBS Sports noting that Lane Kiffin dazzled in his opening appearance while Kyle Whittingham fell flat. The current landscape of the sport is characterized by these new leadership transitions, alongside eligibility chaos and high-stakes Top 25 showdowns, as reported by WHAS11. Coverage from major sports outlets is heavily focused on the immediate impact of these coaching changes.

USA Today has provided a comprehensive ranking of all 31 debuts, featuring figures such as Lane Kiffin and Eric Morris. CBS Sports has taken a more qualitative approach by assigning grades to these first-year coaches, explicitly contrasting the success of Kiffin against the poor start experienced by Whittingham. This trend of rapid evaluation reflects a broader media interest in how new leadership affects team performance from the very first game of the season. Contextualizing these debuts is a wider atmosphere of instability and movement within the college football coaching ranks. The New York Times reports that the coaching carousel continues to turn, identifying specific candidates who could potentially move, including Dillingham and Heupel. This environment of fluidity, combined with the eligibility chaos mentioned by WHAS11, creates a volatile backdrop for first-year coaches trying to establish their systems.

The stakes are particularly high as these coaches attempt to navigate the early season while their peers are already being scrutinized as candidates for other positions. Future developments will likely center on whether these initial grades hold true as the season progresses. Observers will be watching to see if coaches like Kyle Whittingham can recover from flat starts or if Lane Kiffin can maintain his dazzling momentum. Furthermore, the potential movement of candidates like Dillingham and Heupel, as highlighted by The New York Times, suggests that the coaching carousel may not stop until the current season concludes. The continued monitoring of these 31 debuts will determine which first-year leaders have successfully transitioned and which are facing early disaster.
