## Executive Summary
GOG is fighting the decline of physical media by offering 3D scans and printable templates of classic big box PC game packaging.

## Intelligence Brief
Digital storefront GOG has expanded its existing Preservation Program to include printable templates and 3D scans of classic big box PC game packaging. According to reports from TechPowerUp, this update adds these printable 3D game boxes alongside the addition of five new games to the program. The initiative allows users to print and build their own physical versions of legacy game boxes, effectively recreating the tangible experience of early PC gaming. This move targets the preservation of physical artifacts from an era when PC games were sold in large, decorative cardboard boxes rather than small discs or purely digital downloads. Coverage of the announcement is widespread across major gaming and technology outlets. Ars Technica highlights the method of bringing back these boxes through printable templates, while GamingOnLinux specifies that the expansion now includes 3D scans of the box art.

PC Gamer frames this development as a second chance for big box packaging in an era where corporations are seen as wanting to kill physical media. GamesRadar+ emphasizes the contrast between GOG's efforts and the actions of publishers like Sony, who are reportedly moving away from physical games. These outlets collectively present the update as a victory for game historians and collectors. This development arrives at a time when the industry is shifting heavily toward digital distribution and the removal of physical ownership. The context provided by GamesRadar+ suggests that as major publishers like Sony phase out physical media, the need for preservation efforts increases. GOG, which is already known as a DRM-free store, is positioning itself as a steward of gaming history.

The "big box" era represents a specific period of PC gaming culture that is disappearing as physical copies become rarer and more expensive on the secondary market, making these printable models a bridge between digital access and physical ownership. Future developments to monitor include the continued growth of the Preservation Program as GOG adds more titles. TechPowerUp has already confirmed the addition of five new games, suggesting a rolling expansion of the library. Observers will be watching to see how many more classic titles receive these 3D scans and printable templates. Because the program is tied to GOG's status as a DRM-free platform, the focus remains on ensuring that the legacy of these games—both the software and the original packaging—remains accessible to the public without the restrictions typical of modern corporate digital licensing.
