> **Open Intelligence Dossier** · First detected: 2026-09-09 16:07 UTC · Category: Technology

## Executive Summary
Mario Kart World is introducing classic Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) courses in a free software update launching today.

## Intelligence Brief
According to coverage from Kotaku and Engadget, this latest expansion brings back courses originally found in the SNES version of the franchise. The update is being provided to players free of charge, ensuring that the new classic content does not require an additional purchase. This rollout is specifically identified as the 1.8.0 update for the title, bringing a suite of legacy racing environments to the current gaming ecosystem. Multiple gaming outlets are tracking the release, with IGN specifying that these classic tracks are arriving for players on the Nintendo Switch 2. The coverage emphasizes the availability of the content, with Nintendo Life reporting that the update is launching today.

Meanwhile, Nintendo Everything has focused on the technical side of the release, noting that the patch notes for version 1.8.0 are now available for public review. The collective reporting across these outlets highlights a coordinated launch aimed at bridging the gap between the series' modern iterations and its early 16-bit roots. The introduction of these courses matters because it represents a direct integration of the SNES original's design into the modern Mario Kart World framework. By making the update free, the developer is expanding the existing map pool without adding financial barriers for the user base. This move aligns with a broader trend of reviving legacy assets for newer hardware, specifically the Nintendo Switch 2, as mentioned by IGN.

The presence of patch notes suggests a broader set of changes beyond just the tracks, though the retro courses remain the primary focus of the current news cycle. Observers should monitor the official patch notes released for version 1.8.0 to determine the exact number of SNES courses added to the game. Because the update is launching today, the immediate focus will be on the stability of the rollout for Nintendo Switch 2 players. Future developments will likely center on how these classic tracks are integrated into the existing game modes of Mario Kart World. Coverage does not yet specify if more legacy consoles will be represented in future updates, but the current focus remains entirely on the SNES-era content delivered in today's free patch.
