## Executive Summary
Five people are dead and 87 remain missing after a passenger ferry caught fire in Philippine waters between El Nido and Coron.

## Intelligence Brief
A passenger ferry in the Philippines has been struck by a fire, resulting in five confirmed deaths and leaving a significant number of passengers unaccounted for. According to reports from CGTN, the Philippine Coast Guard has officially stated that 87 people are currently missing. The vessel was traveling from El Nido and was located in the waters off Coron when the incident occurred. The fire broke out on the ship, leading to a crisis situation that has required immediate emergency responses to locate the missing individuals and recover the deceased. Extensive coverage of the disaster is being provided by several international and local news organizations. BBC and WRAL have both reported on the high number of missing persons and the five confirmed fatalities.

Local coverage from GMA Network specifies the exact route of the passenger ship, noting it originated in El Nido and was off the coast of Coron when the fire hit. Additionally, China Daily Global Edition emphasizes the geographic location of the burning vessel, placing the incident near Palawan. These outlets collectively highlight the severity of the losses and the scale of the ongoing search operation. The background of this event centers on the maritime transit between key points in the Palawan region, specifically the corridor between El Nido and Coron. The reports indicate that the ship was a passenger ferry, meaning the victims likely included travelers moving between these coastal destinations. The high number of missing persons, cited as 87 by the Coast Guard, suggests that a substantial portion of the manifest has not yet been accounted for following the fire.

The situation underscores the inherent risks associated with passenger vessel transit in these waters. Future developments will likely center on the efforts of the Philippine Coast Guard to locate the 87 missing passengers. Coverage does not yet specify the cause of the fire or the total number of passengers on board at the time of the incident. Observers will be watching for updated casualty counts from the Philippine authorities and further details regarding the recovery operations conducted near Palawan. The focus remains on whether any of the missing persons can be found alive as the search continues in the waters off Coron.
