## Executive Summary
Portland City Council has voted to advance plans for a new Broadway-capable theater located at Portland State University.

## Intelligence Brief
The Portland City Council has officially voted to move forward with a plan to develop a new arts venue at Portland State University (PSU). According to reporting from OregonLive.com and KOIN.com, this facility is intended to be a Broadway-capable theater. The decision follows a City Council hearing where the city's leadership expressed its support for the project. Along with the decision regarding the theater, Oregon ArtsWatch reports that the city also decided that a Lincoln statue will be returned to its pedestal. Multiple regional outlets have highlighted different facets of the vote.

FM News 101 KXL emphasizes that the plan for the Broadway theater in downtown Portland is now moving forward. However, Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB) provides a critical distinction regarding the financial state of the project, noting that while the Portland City Council has committed its support, it has not committed any money to the endeavor. This indicates that the project has political momentum but lacks a secured funding source at this stage. Context for the new development includes a debate over existing infrastructure. According to Oregon ArtsWatch, supporters of the Keller facility spoke at the City Council hearing to deny claims that the auditorium is unsafe.

These discussions specifically addressed concerns regarding earthquake danger, with supporters arguing against the notion that the current venue is hazardous. This tension suggests that the push for a new PSU-based theater is occurring alongside a dispute over the safety and viability of current arts spaces. Future developments will likely center on how the project transitions from a vote of support to a funded reality. Because OPB reports that no money has been committed yet, the next phase involves identifying the financial resources needed to build the Broadway-capable theater. Observers will also be watching the implementation of the city's decision to return the Lincoln statue to its pedestal as part of the broader city actions reported by Oregon ArtsWatch.
