## Executive Summary
Health officials in North Dakota and Colorado report the first West Nile virus fatalities of 2026 as viral activity expands in the Midwest.

## Intelligence Brief
Health authorities in North Dakota have officially confirmed the first fatality attributed to the West Nile virus for the 2026 calendar year. This death marks the first such occurrence in the state during the current year. The announcement comes as part of a broader pattern of virus activity across several regions. In a separate development, Montrose County has also reported its first death from the West Nile virus this year, indicating that the virus is causing fatal outcomes in multiple states simultaneously during this period of the year. Extensive coverage of the North Dakota fatality has been provided by several regional and national outlets.

Valley News Live, the North Dakota Monitor, KX News, and Yahoo all reported that the state has seen its first West Nile death of 2026. Further reports from Prairie Public Broadcasting, KFYR-TV, and InForum reiterated this specific fatality count for the year. Meanwhile, FOX21 News Colorado focused on the situation in Montrose County, ensuring that the regional spread of the virus was documented across different geographical areas. Beyond the fatalities, coverage indicates that the virus is actively expanding its reach in other states. According to reports from Central Nebraska Today, West Nile virus activity has expanded into Buffalo County.

This expansion in Nebraska, combined with the fatalities in North Dakota and Colorado, suggests a widespread presence of the virus across the central and western United States. The reports collectively highlight a period of significant viral activity as officials track the spread of the disease through various counties and states. Future monitoring will likely focus on whether more fatalities are recorded in North Dakota or Montrose County. Additionally, the expansion of activity into Buffalo County, Nebraska, serves as a marker for where health officials may continue to track the virus. Current reports do not specify total case counts or the demographics of the deceased, but the focus remains on the recording of these first annual fatalities and the continued geographic spread of the virus across the region.
