# Sniffer Dogs Make Mistakes When They're Hungry

> **Open Intelligence Dossier** · First detected: 2026-09-12 05:07 UTC · Category: World

## Executive Summary
Recent studies reveal that hunger significantly impacts the performance of scent-detection dogs, increasing false alarms.

## Intelligence Brief
Specifically, coverage indicates that hungry scent detection dogs are more likely to make mistakes and raise false alarms during their detection work. Outlets report that these animals are prone to crying wolf when they are hungry, directly affecting their ability to accurately identify specific smells. Coverage across the participating publications consistently emphasizes the behavioral tendencies of working dogs when their physical state is compromised by hunger.

Inshorts specifically notes that both diet and training can influence a dog's overall performance during complex smell-identification tasks. This research provides critical context regarding the operational reliability of working animals deployed in sensitive detection fields. While the provided coverage does not explicitly detail the exact testing environments or the wider practical implications for law enforcement and security operations, it establishes a clear link between a dog's hunger levels and misidentifications during scent work.

Future updates will likely depend on whether additional research expands upon how diet and training protocols can be adjusted to mitigate these hunger-induced performance errors. Coverage does not yet specify upcoming publication dates for follow-up studies or whether specific working agencies plan to alter their feeding schedules based on these findings.
