GTA 6 Gets Official ESRB Rating and It's as Mature as You'd Expect

Grand Theft Auto 6 has officially received its ESRB rating, signaling a level of mature content consistent with expectations for the franchise. Parallel to this, a leak from the PlayStation Store has revealed PS5 age ratings, which is being characterized as a vital step occurring before the final release date of the game. Much of the current discourse focuses on the Australian market, where the title has been associated with an X 18+ rating, suggesting the game is pushing boundaries beyond those set by its predecessor, GTA 5. Coverage from IGN confirms the official ESRB rating has been issued, while notebookcheck.net emphasizes the significance of the PlayStation Store leak regarding the PS5 version. Beebom reports that the X 18+ rating in Australia indicates the game is going beyond the limits of GTA 5.

Further reporting from The Sunday Guardian highlights that the Australian rating specifically lists 'strong nudity' and 'strong adult scenes' as the justification for the high age restriction. This specific PlayStation advertisement has fueled a new wave of rumors regarding the nature of the adult content included in the game. Understanding these ratings is critical because they provide the first concrete evidence of the game's thematic direction. While the ESRB rating is expectedly mature, the X 18+ classification in Australia is particularly stringent. The contrast between the standard mature ratings and the more restrictive Australian designation has created a divide in how the game's content is being perceived.

This tension is highlighted by the report from GTA BOOM, which argues that the X 18+ rating in Australia is almost certainly a mistake rather than an intentional classification by the ratings board. Future developments will likely center on whether the Australian rating is corrected or upheld. Observers are watching for official confirmation regarding the 'strong adult scenes' and 'strong nudity' mentioned in The Sunday Guardian's reporting. As the PlayStation Store leak suggests the game is moving toward a release date, further technical and regulatory details are expected to emerge. The industry is now waiting to see if the X 18+ designation remains a point of contention or if it reflects a genuine shift in the series' approach to adult content.
