## Executive Summary
The Pentagon backs an ambitious plan to beam solar power from space to Earth.

## Intelligence Brief
Recent reporting indicates that the United States military is advancing a project to transmit solar power from orbit down to Earth. Coverage from outlets including Breaking Defense, Interesting Engineering, UA.NEWS, Solarbytes, and oilprice.com highlights that the Department of Defense has taken a concrete step closer toward a demonstration contract. Specifically, the Pentagon has ordered an orbital solar power beacon test. According to the available sources, a company named Overview Energy has secured the defense contract to build the space solar beacon. The coverage heavily emphasizes the technological ambition and the strategic backing of the initiative by the United States defense apparatus.

Outlets such as Breaking Defense and oilprice.com frame the Department of Defense involvement as a significant push toward utilizing orbital systems for energy transmission. While the articles document the awarding of the contract to Overview Energy and the overarching goal of beaming power from orbit, current coverage does not yet specify the exact technical architecture, the launch timeline, or the operational locations for receiving the beamed energy on the ground. This development situates itself within ongoing explorations of alternative energy sources and space-based capabilities by military planners. The concept of capturing solar energy in orbit—where sunlight is uninterrupted by weather or the Earth's rotation—and beaming it to the surface has long been a theoretical proposition in aerospace engineering. Now, the awarding of the defense contract to Overview Energy transitions the concept into a tangible testing phase backed by the United States government, marking a shift from theoretical studies to practical orbital demonstrations under Department of Defense oversight.

As the initiative moves forward, observers will be tracking the execution of the Overview Energy contract and the specifics of the planned orbital solar power beacon test. Future coverage is expected to provide details on the implementation phases of the Department of Defense demonstration, though current reports do not specify when the orbital test will officially launch or how the power transmission will be measured on Earth. The extent of the military applications and potential commercial spinoffs also remains to be detailed in subsequent updates from the reporting outlets.
