## Executive Summary
Microsoft is overhauling Windows 11 Search to integrate Copilot, allowing the AI to access local files and modify system settings directly.

## Intelligence Brief
Microsoft is implementing a major overhaul of the Windows 11 Search functionality, transforming the taskbar search into a more powerful control center for the operating system. According to reports from Windows Latest and Windows Central, the update is designed to make search the fastest method for controlling a PC, with the notable capability of changing system settings on behalf of the user. This integration expands the role of Copilot, which UA.NEWS reports will be updated to support specific commands. The overhaul focuses on shifting the search experience from a simple retrieval tool to an active system management interface. Coverage from The Verge and Pasquale Pillitteri emphasizes that Microsoft is granting Copilot increased control over both the Windows environment and the user's local files.

This expansion includes the introduction of sandboxed AI agents, as detailed by Pillitteri, which aim to balance the AI's system access with security protocols. XDA highlights the redesign of the Windows Taskbar search specifically, framing it as a highly anticipated tool for efficiency. The breadth of coverage across these outlets suggests a strategic pivot toward making generative AI the primary layer of interaction between the user and the OS. Context for these changes is provided by a simultaneous update from the GitHub Blog, which announces that local sandboxing for GitHub Copilot is now generally available. This indicates a broader corporate trend at Microsoft to deploy AI capabilities that operate on local data within secure, isolated environments.

By moving AI agents into sandboxes, the company is attempting to enable deep file system integration—such as Copilot's new ability to read and manage local files—without compromising the overall stability or security of the host machine. This shift reflects a transition from cloud-based AI assistance to local system orchestration. Future developments to monitor include the full deployment of these search commands and the rollout of the sandboxed AI agents to the general Windows 11 user base. Based on the reports from UA.NEWS and Windows Latest, the primary focus will be on how the AI handles the modification of user settings and the extent of the local file access provided to Copilot. Since the GitHub Copilot sandboxing is already generally available, observers will likely look for similar stability and availability markers for the integrated Windows Search overhaul as it moves from first-look previews to a wide release.
