# Record breaker! Astronomers spot powerful cosmic explosion that lasted 27 days

> **Open Intelligence Dossier** · First detected: 2026-10-27 13:40 UTC · Category: Science

## Executive Summary
Astronomers have recorded a powerful cosmic explosion and gamma-ray burst that persisted for an unprecedented 27 days.

## Intelligence Brief
Recent science coverage details the discovery of an unusually prolonged cosmic event that has captured the attention of researchers globally. Specifically, astronomers have observed and recorded a massive explosion in space characterized by a duration of 27 days of activity. Outlets including Starlust.org, The Independent, UA.NEWS, and Space have reported on this astronomical anomaly, noting its extreme power and duration. Reporting from these outlets emphasizes the puzzling nature of the phenomenon for the scientific community.

According to the coverage, astronomers currently do not know why the explosion lasted for such an extended period. While some sources identify the event specifically as a gamma-ray burst, others refer to it more broadly as a powerful cosmic explosion, highlighting the ongoing efforts to understand the mechanics behind the record-breaking duration. Context provided within the headlines indicates that this event stands out significantly from typical observations in space due to its 27-day timeline. Standard cosmic explosions and gamma-ray bursts usually exhibit much shorter active phases, making this extended duration a notable record breaker.

The coverage does not yet specify the exact distance of the explosion from Earth or the precise instrumentation used to first detect the anomaly. Future developments will depend on ongoing astronomical investigations into the data collected from the 27-day event. Coverage does not yet state when researchers will publish formal findings or peer-reviewed analyses regarding the cause of the prolonged activity. Observers and astronomy enthusiasts must await further updates from scientific institutions and the reporting outlets as researchers continue to puzzle over the data.
