## Executive Summary
Illinois football is restructuring its future schedule, replacing matchups with Mizzou with a new home-and-home series against Notre Dame.

## Intelligence Brief
The University of Illinois football program has announced a significant shift in its future scheduling for the 2027 and 2028 seasons. According to reports from University of Illinois Athletics and Notre Dame Fighting Irish, the two programs have officially agreed to a home-and-home series during those years. This new arrangement comes as Illinois simultaneously removes two previously scheduled games against Missouri from its calendar. The changes result in a direct swap of opponents for the 2027 and 2028 windows, fundamentally altering the road and home commitments for the Fighting Illini football team. Multiple sports news outlets are highlighting the ripple effects of these scheduling decisions. Coverage from 247Sports emphasizes that Mizzou will now be forced to shuffle its future schedules to fill the gaps left by the dropped Illinois games.

ESPN reports that for Notre Dame, this new series with Illinois serves as a replacement for previously scheduled meetings with Purdue in 2027 and 2028. Sports Illustrated and On3 have also confirmed the details of the dropped Mizzou games and the newly established agreement with the Notre Dame program, ensuring the timeline of these changes is clear across major sports media platforms. Understanding the context of these moves requires looking at the specific teams involved in the scheduling vacuum. The home-and-home format ensures that both Illinois and Notre Dame will host each other once over the two-year span. For the University of Illinois, this represents a strategic pivot away from Mizzou and toward a high-profile opponent. The shift is particularly notable because it involves three different major programs—Illinois, Notre Dame, and Purdue—all adjusting their calendars for the same two-year period, creating a chain reaction of scheduling needs for the affected athletic departments.

Moving forward, the primary focus will be on how the University of Missouri addresses the voids in its 2027 and 2028 schedules. As 247Sports noted, Mizzou must now find new opponents to replace the two dropped games against Illinois. Additionally, the sports community will be watching for any further adjustments to Notre Dame's schedule now that the Purdue games have been replaced. All confirmed dates for the Illinois and Notre Dame series are set for 2027 and 2028, marking the next phase of these programs' competitive calendars based on the official announcements.
